The Aircraft

The Decathlon “Super D” is a dream plane for those who like to see the world upside down. Rated to handle +6/-5 g’s, the Super D was built to dance through the sky, performing airshow style moves.

What are the requirements for an aerobatics flight in the Super D?

To fly, you must be in reasonably good health, capable of understanding and following all safety instructions, and fit comfortably into the aircraft. You should be no taller than 6’4” and no heavier than 225 lbs. You will be required to sign a Release of Liability and a mandatory safety briefing.

Do I need prior flying experience for this adventure?

No. You’ll fly with an FAA certified flight instructor who will teach you all you need to know before you take off to enjoy a taste of aerobatics. Those with flight experience can book one of our flight packages designed specifically for pilots looking to learn aerobatics, improve their stick and rudder skills, earn a tailwheel endorsement, or complete upset training. All flying adventures begin on the ground, with a safety briefing and appropriate ground school.

Can I fly the plane?

The final decision rests with the pilot-in-command, but the answer is almost always “yes!” Provided that you’ve demonstrated the ability to follow safety instructions and you’re within the proper airspace, you’ll be invited to take the controls.

It’s your adventure, so you help determine the lesson plan. Non-pilots can expect to fly 50-75% of the time and pilots 70 – 90% of the flight.

Where are flights based?

Flights take off from a secluded grass airstrip in southern Sarasota County. The small airport is located along Florida’s popular Suncoast and is a short drive from several popular Gulf beaches. Nearby beach towns include Venice, Englewood, Boca Grande, Casey Key, Osprey, Nokomis and Sarasota.

The airstrip is about an hour drive from Sarasota International Airport (SRQ) and even closer to Punta Gorda Airport (PGD). Southwest Florida International Airport in Ft Myers (RSW) and St. Pete Clearwater International Airport (PIE) are both less than 1 ½ hours away Tampa International (TPA) is about two hours away.

Where will we fly?

Aerobatic flights could take place over nearby Myakka State Park or out over the Gulf of Mexico, depending on student flight plan selection, area air traffic and weather conditions.

When can I schedule an aerobatic flight lesson on Florida’s Suncoast n the Decathlon “Super D”?

Flights are available all year long, by appointment only, based on pilot availability.
