White Sharks Arrive in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 30, 2005 - It's officially
great white shark season in San Francisco. The season kicked off Labor
Day weekend with the spotting of two great whites, a 14-footer and
an 18-footer, by participants in a day-long cage diving adventure
offered by Incredible Adventures.
Each September through November, great white sharks
the size of cars gather in the waters near San Francisco's Farallon
Islands to feed on the area's population of elephant seals. Incredible
Adventures takes small groups of cage divers and topside observers
to this prime shark viewing location for the chance to come face to
face with one of the ocean's most feared predators.
No dive certification is required for those who wish
to enter the company's massive 12 ft x 5 ft shark cage. Dives are
closely supervised by a certified dive instructor who instructs participants
in the proper use of the boat's onboard air supply unit. The cost
of a cage dive is $875 per person and includes the use of a coldwater
wetsuit. Those who prefer to watch for sharks from the comfortable
observation deck of the 59-ft luxury boat pay $375. Meals and refreshments
are provided aboard the boat.
Incredible Adventures offers its great white shark
adventures in cooperation with Ocean Outreach, a non-profit organization
dedicated to preserving marine life through education. Ocean Outreach
believes those who see the sharks, whales, seals and birds who inhabit
the Farallons Marine Sanctuary will want to help preserve the area
in order to insure their survival. Each adventure is staffed with
two nature experts who share their knowledge in a fun and informal
setting.
The great white shark adventures depart from the Angel
Island Ferry Dock in Tiburon, located just across the Golden Gate
Bridge from San Francisco. Trips are offered weekends through mid-November
and space is still available.
